OVERVIEW

Pan-Atlantic University needed its library’s digital resources to be genuinely reachable by students under real time pressure, not buried behind a login wall and three menus, the way a lot of institutional library sites end up.

The Challenge

University library systems have a specific failure pattern: they’re built to satisfy an IT department’s requirements checklist (search, catalogue, OPAC, database access) without much thought for the actual moment a student is using it, usually stressed, usually short on time, often trying to find one specific resource before a deadline. Functional isn’t the same as usable.

Our Approach

We deliberately stripped the homepage down to what students actually use most: catalogue search, OPAC access, and links to research databases, surfaced immediately rather than nested in a menu structure designed around the library’s internal departmental organisation instead of the student’s actual need.

We also paid close attention to performance, since campus network conditions vary by time of day and location, and a slow-loading library homepage during exam season is exactly the wrong moment for friction.

Key Features

Priority-First Homepage

The three most-used tools, catalogue search, OPAC, and database access, are immediately visible without scrolling, rather than requiring a student to hunt through a traditional library-site menu structure.

Simplified Navigation

Reduced menu depth overall, since every additional click is a point where a stressed student might give up and just ask a librarian in person instead, defeating the purpose of a digital system.

Performance-Conscious Build

Optimised for the variable network conditions typical of a university campus, so the site stays usable during high-traffic periods like exam weeks.
